Digital Play for Young Children

This eight-week course is about the ways in which young children (0-6 years) play with digital devices. It covers topics including:

  • The differences between virtual and real world play
  • Types of digital play
  • How to decide if a digital product is good for young children
  • The role of grandparents, carers and siblings in supporting play
  • Your own digital habits as a parent/carer
  • Screentime for young children
  • Keeping safe on the internet

The course has been designed by the Children and Technology group from The University of Edinburgh. It aims to show you what digital products are available and help you make good choices for young children. It is delivered through videos, readings, e-tivities and assignments. You will be supported by an online tutor and discuss the course online with other students.

The course is for anyone with an interest in young children’s digital play. This might include:

  • Parents and Carers

  • Childminders
  • Early Years Educators
  • Nursery Workers
  • Health Practitioners
  • Other professionals who work with families

Structured, Supported Learning

You can begin this course at any time, and work though it in your own time.

Before you begin, you will complete an independent learning plan. This will help you to focus on what you want to learn and the way that you learn best.

Your online tutor will answer your questions and offer help throughout the course. If you have problems understanding the language or completing work because of your English, our training support worker will help you.
