playbase 1 online

This introductory course  is delivered through readings, e-tivities and an assignment, as well as tutor input and online discussion with fellow students. It requires approximately 2-3 hours per week to complete, although this will vary depending on your learning pace and style. You can begin a course at any time, and complete it in a timescale which fits in with your life.

This course asks questions such as What is play? Why does it matter? How does play affect the learning and development of young children? In order to relect on these questions you will:

  • Explore the value and role of play in the development of young children.
  • Look back on your own memories of play and consider children's play needs at different ages and stages.
  • Consider the role of art and creativity in the early years.
  • Discover how to build on children's play experiences and share these with other adults in their lives.
  • Learn about Froebel, one of the pioneers of early years education.
  • Design an indoor play space (assignment), taking into account children's wellbeing, health and safety at different ages.

This course is for anyone with an interest in the early years child. You may be:

  • A parent or carer who would like to understand more about the development of your child and how to best support their learning through play.
  • Someone who would like to work with young children in a creche, nursery, or as a childminder in your own home.*
  • Someone who already works or volunteers with children who would like to develop their knowledge and understanding, and perhaps work towards a qualification.*
  • Any of the above who also wants to gain valuable digital skills in a meaningful context.

*Also see Playbase 3 (SCQF Level 3) which introduces you to Professional Practice in Childcare Settings.

At the beginning of a course you will complete a learning plan to help you focus on what you want to achieve and help you stay on track.

Tutors will offer guidance and feedback on e-tivities and assignments, as well as answering your questions and facilitating a positive and progressive learning environment. We believe you are in charge of your own learning and we are here to support you in getting the most out of our courses.

You will have the opportunity to engage with other students in our forum - a great source of peer learning and support.
